A lot of discourse around this, but one thing is bothering me that I want to address: TOO many people are saying, “SF6 blew up in Japan because the influencers/Vtubers played it!”. That is not true, and I can give you 100 examples where this has not worked in the past. Influencers get paid to promote games/events on a daily basis, and 99.9% of the time this leads to nothing more than a temporary bump viewership and a check in the streamer’s pocket. What made SF6 different was that these influencers actually CARED about the game. They practiced outside of their paid streams, they respected the game and community, and they took their matches seriously. The FGC in turn saw this dedication and welcomed them with open arms, which led to the explosive growth we saw in Japan. I’ve got nothing against these 2 being brought on stage to put on a show match - as long as they take it seriously. Regardless of their level, as long as they put in the work trying to improve, respect the game, and care about the result, then they are no different from any other competitors in the FGC. But if it’s obvious they’re just there to try and be entertaining while collecting a check, then this is not something I’d want to see in future events.
