"Physical performance is evaluating football performance." This is the key to understanding how Amorim's United can go from being incredibly dominant against Burnley in the first half to looking vulnerable and at risk of conceding at any time in the second. It has everything to do with physical expenditure. When United are on top and constantly creating chances in the first half, how are they doing it? It is through constant up-back-throughs, artificial transitions, and channel balls pinged by Fernandes and others. This works brilliantly when the players have the stamina to maintain the intensity for those actions, and it is a great situational tool to have, but it is incredibly physically taxing and unsustainable if that is the whole game plan. This leads to inconsistent physical performances throughout a game. Compare that to the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, City, and PSG, who control territory, push the opposition back, and then create. This approach allows them to maintain high levels of physical performance throughout the 90 minutes. You simply cannot keep attacking large spaces for the entire game, and once United are forced to slow down because the players will have to, whether the coach likes it or not, United have no means of progressing centrally or creating in small spaces. Amorim treats stamina as an infinite resource, and despite the much-needed positive result, I do not see any improvements.

Football club that has had a central midfield problem for a decade fails to find space for a very gifted central midfield connector. Ridiculous situation. Instead of spending ~€450m in 12 months on trying to appease ETH and Amorim, the club should have invested into building around the good assets that is already has - like Mainoo.

@JovaneSpence It’s mental mate, I really don’t recognise the club if this is a legit option. I want Amorim to work and think it can, but there’s zero sense in not being able to fit Kobbie into your plans. You build that midfield around him!

If the project is to sell off our best academy talent in a decade for a cut-price fee, all to accommodate a manager with a 20% win rate, then I’m not sure I back that project. Absolutely brainless.
