The Misuse of Drugs Act received Royal Assent on 27th May 1971, yet still provides the foundation for UK drug policy. Today, I have raised the question as to whether this legislation has reached its “expiration date” in my @dodspolintel report: bit.ly/49xRGPG

To ensure the Tobacco and Vapes Bill does not succumb to the same fate as the Misuse of Drugs Act, its provisions must be complemented by a programme of measures to support current smokers. 10

The Government urgently need to address the ever growing public health crisis of addiction, prioritising the principle of harm reduction. As this report highlights, it is especially paradoxical that such an approach has been welcomed for gambling. 9

Stagnating drug use rates should not be cause for celebration. A corresponding rise in drug-related deaths demonstrates the extent of harm caused by any level of drug misuse, and accordingly today's figures should not detract from the urgent argument for Government action. 14

For lasting and effectual change to reduce both drug misuse and drug-related deaths, the Government should consider taking action to implement crucial harm reduction measures, such as safe consumption rooms. 13
