On World Poetry Day, one of Ukraine’s poets is writing from the front. Oleksandr Kucherенко — pen name Sashko Obriy — is a published Ukrainian poet, member of the National Writers’ Union, and now a soldier in Ukraine’s 66th Mechanized Brigade, serving in the Mara unmanned systems battalion. He writes from war — but not only about war. From the steppes of Donetsk to the forest-steppe of Kharkiv, he says nature still gives him words, humour still gives him balance, and poetry still gives his fellow soldiers something rare at the front: a sense that life is bigger than destruction. That matters more than it may seem. Because Russia’s war is not only a war against territory. It is also a war against memory, language, identity, and culture. And Ukraine’s resistance is not only military. It is also cultural. A poet in uniform, writing between drone missions, is part of that resistance.
