How did Israel manage to pinpoint Abu Obeida? Israel's internal security agency, the Shin Bet, has been tracking his movements for a while. Since October 7th there had been at least 2 other assassination attempts that failed. On the night of August 29th reports on Gazan channels circulated, claiming that Hamas conducted 4 ambushes against advancing IDF forces in the Zeitoun neighborhood in Gaza City. Rumors were spread on 4 Israeli soldiers being unaccounted for and potentially kidnapped. Al Jazeera quickly picked up the story and devoted their nighttime panel to discussing the matter. Due to the hype surrounding the news, Hamas political bureau member Izzat al-Rishq released a statement saying the al-Qassam Brigades "imposed equations", which could be interpreted as a wink and a nod towards the rumor. Some Palestinians claim Izzat al-Rishq (who resides in Qatar) then called Abu Obeida in order to confirm the news. Israel intercepted the call and was able to determine his exact location - he was apparently staying in an apartment in the Besiso building in the Rimal neighborhood. This account of events remains unverified.
