@JFLusi Sure. If you don’t like tax breaks or developers, there’s a good chance you don’t think he has the right vision. He can be fairly heavy-handed with politicians when he wants something. He is probably more conservative than the average democrat right now.

@DanMcGowan Good column. One claim cries out for explanation. You wrote "advocates and residents...distrust both his motives and his old-school approach to public order." All evidence suggests Mr. Paolino's motives and approach are honorable. Who distrusts his motives and approach and why?

It's tantamount to accusing one of bad faith. Many Democrats have smeared opponents as Nazis, but somehow exempt a person with a Nazi tattoo? Your dismissal of this as an important issue seems flip and unserious.

@dennismhogan I think I mostly agree with you. But I also think Joe deserves credit for taking a chance.

@DanMcGowan Cards on the table: I’m skeptical that people avoid the mall because it’s unsafe when it’s far more likely people avoid it because malls everywhere are dying thanks to online retail etc. And that means only people with nowhere else to go come—which leads to safety problems
