One sees hateful social media accounts posting on a daily basis about how Japan's Muslim residents, who are mostly law-abiding Indonesians, are going to "destroy" Japan. Meanwhile, the Japan government has officially warned Japanese tourists to stop raping Indonesian children.

Food prices are expected to rise in the second half of the year due to higher costs of fertiliser, livestock feed and logistics driven by the West Asia conflict. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu told BFM News that Putrajaya is especially worried about rising prices of grain and soy. 🧵1

Food inflation eased to 1.1%, with declines in vegetables like onions, garlic and tomatoes helping to moderate overall price pressures, even as eating out remained elevated at 2.3%. Still, 62.5% of items recorded price increases, showing broad-based inflation. 🧵3

New paper in Nature. The more a government controls its domestic media, the more it dominates AI training data, the more pro-regime outputs we get from AI. By scraping the open web, LLMs are unwittingly laundering state-coordinated narratives into seemingly objective answers.

This is not a very sensible comment. The reduction in multiples you are talking about (from 4.2x to 2.4x) is purely due to base effects—because people earning low incomes pay close to nothing. Bear in mind I could say the following: • Someone who earns RM5,001 for the year will pay RM1 in tax. Their effective tax rate (ETR) is 1/5000 = 0.02%. • When they earn RM20,000 per year, they pay RM150. Their ETR is 150/20000 = 0.75%. Is it logical to be calling this a 40x increase, and making statements based on that? ----- Mathematically, literally EVERY single progressive tax system in the world will have this feature where the multiples between brackets get smaller. If you want the precise description: The ETR will asymptotically approach the highest marginal tax rate as income goes to infinity. I suggest you drop this point about 4.2x vs 2.4x - it suggests somewhat of a lack of appreciation for inherent features of log-shaped graphs / progressive tax systems. Instead, you could propose that: • People should start paying tax from the first RM1 they earn, or • The marginal tax rate should increase at an increasing rate I don't agree with either one, but if you want to fix the 'multiple' problem you identified, those are the only ways to do it, and even then, you will hit the same problem of reducing multiples at some point unless you are willing to increase the ETR to > 100%.

May 13 is quiet in Malaysia. That is the problem. Today, I write that May 13 did not end in 1969. The racial riots of that year became more than a national tragedy. They became a way of governing. malaymail.com/news/what-you-…

Four presidents (Trump, Milei, Asfura, Noboa), one prime minister (Netanyahu), and an ex-president and drug smuggler (Hernandez), along with many others, are all in on a plot to undermine the elections in Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico using a media platform they plan to create in Washington D.C. with the help of their Republican friends. This is arguably one of the biggest geopolitical scandals in recent decades, and Western media isn't covering it. #Hondurasgate is big news everywhere else, especially in Latin America. open.substack.com/pub/extremeart…

Raucous debates on fuel subsidy reform in M'sia😅 3 facts with some nuances, fwiw: #1. Govt's been footing an untenably rising subsidy bill, which has risen ~10x since the war --> Price signals now need to flow to users as that gives incentives to consume fuel more efficiently #2. "Govt" footing bill is, really, the "taxpayer" footing bill. And there's a lot of debate ongoing that Tx as taxpayers contribute the most --> While that is true -- indeed, many M'sian workers fall below the taxable personal income thresholds -- they still contribute to the public purse, for ex, through (regressive) SST & excise duties whenever they buy most goods & services. Not as much as the Tx in absolute terms but to say they don’t pay any taxes whatsoever is a bit misleading #3. There're no solutions; only tradeoffs, both economic & political, which are getting harder to manage --> Politics may win in the short run, but economics wins in the long run. Having a longer-term vision is essential...and while it’s easy to blame politicians, politicians also respond to incentives, and reflect the will of voters (or risk being voted out in democracies)…so it’s ultimately about what kind of social contract M’sians want with each other in the context of subsidy reform End/

Trump is suing the IRS, which he oversees, for $10 billion. Both sides want to settle to avoid going to court. Aside from money, one of the settlement terms is to drop all audits of himself and his family. He’s stealing $10B from taxpayers and covering up his tax crimes. You get that, right? nytimes.com/2026/05/12/bus…

How much do Najib Razak's corruption cases cost Malaysia? RM 8.89 billion. Enough to build 34 new hospitals or 93 new schools. A Malaysian earning a median monthly salary of RM 2,864 would have to work 261, 636 years to accumulate that amount of money. newslab.malaysiakini.com/paw/story/

A very serious investigation has been published in @nytimes about rape and sexual violence carried out by the authorities in Israel. I am also quoted in this article as one of many, many people who provided accounts to this newspaper, which is considered extremely pro-Israeli. In response, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote that these are antisemitic “blood libels.” It is clear that the reports already published by Al Jazeera in 2024, and by me in 2025 when the BBC censored and deleted the interview with me, are true. People simply need to listen to Palestinians. But the world does not listen to Palestinians. It only listens when it is written in The New York Times — and now it is written there.

@Malachians I know McClair played in central midfield with Ince for most of 92-93, but why does the commentator say Hughes would be alone up front in 1990? It's only 2 years since McClair became the first to break the 20-goal barrier since Best

Supply shocks are clashing with the crop calendar. But in Thailand, they’re also disrupting precarious cycles of debt that farmers rely on to go from season to season. Farmers are getting credit from loansharks / local lenders that could take years to clear.

Thailand is one of the first ag countries to enter a planting season since the Iran war. We went to document the impact of supply shocks to fuel/fertilizer — It was worse than I anticipated. Farmers are leaving huge tracts of land barren bc they can’t afford to plant.

prestasiyb.com ni nampak bagus on surface. Tapi hari tu bila godek2 tengok prestasi YB yang saya kenal, nampak data yang macam tak betul. Contohnya rekod kehadiran saudara @howardlee_my ke sidang parlimen. Ikut web ni, kehadiran MP Ipoh Timor hanya 13%. Tapi ikut data parlimen, kehadiran beliau ialah 84%. Jauh sangat discrepancies ni.
