Happy to go against what I said previously about JWP - I would have him back in the squad. £115k a week he’s on and he’s rotting in the reserves while we’re short of numbers and experience. Been a club captain for years as well so has leadership qualities. Time for Nuno to swallow his pride on this one.

Business rates. The British people, and its MPs, do not understand the coming apocalypse. And it is going to be an apocalypse. I talk to pub owners, cafe owners, all types of small business owners. They are terrified and nobody is listening. Real people. Family businesses. The sort of places that keep towns and villages alive. They are running out of road, and the business rates change will be the end of the road for many. They’ve absorbed blow after blow over the last few decades and kept going anyway. But this will be the end for many. A sad, bitter end. Rising rents. Rising supplier costs. Rising insurance. Endless compliance. Paperwork that grows every year but adds absolutely zero value. They dealt with all the lockdown bullshit. Forced closures. Confusing rules. Constant U-turns. Damaging loans. ‘Following’ the science, remember? Many got no proper support due to the structure of their businesses. They battled on. People remortgaged homes, drained savings, worked unpaid - just to keep the doors intact so they could reopen when finally allowed. When restrictions were lifted, it wasn’t normal. Customers poorer, costs stayed high, footfall patchy. Then the energy costs blowing up after the Ukraine war. Still bleeding the business dry. And now, on top of all of that, they’re staring down a business rates revaluation that could be the final straw. Not because their business is suddenly thriving or profits are surging, but because a formula has made some impossibly complicated recalculations. For hospitality, there is no escape. A pub can’t go remote. A cafe can’t move to a warehouse. They have to be there. In the town, paying extortionate business rates. This, of course, is all after higher operating costs from the first Reeves budget. NI changes were punishing for these businesses. Absolutely punishing. We inflict such brutal costs on high street businesses, then we’re confused when so many of our town centres are becoming desolate shitholes? Not that difficult to figure out, is it? And now this. The rates increase. For small pubs, it’s adding tens of thousands of pounds to the bill every year. THEY WILL GO BUST. There is no way to pay it and stay viable. It’s impossible. I’d like to see Reeves try. Then she’d really start crying. I am doing what I can in Westminster. Questions asked, motion tabled - with just three MPs supporting so far. James McMurdock, Gavin Williamson and Peter Bedford. I am going to lobby for more support, and hopefully we can get Government to listen. We’ve seen with the farming tax changes can be made if enough noise is made, but sadly I’m just not seeing anywhere near that same level of anger. And we need anger for them to notice. This could be the end of the British pub. That is not an exaggeration, and it’s not just pubs - it’s entire industries. So get angry. Ask your MP to sign the motion. I am doing what I can in Westminster. It HAS to change.

The academy of football: A proud tradition at potential risk. “Play the youth” “Give the youth a chance” “What’s the point in having an academy if you don’t use it” Those are the cries we’ve heard for many years from fans. Wether it’s because it’s believed there is a player in the youth ranks that genuinely deserved a chance, the team were playing so poorly a youth player couldn’t do any worse or it was simply a nostalgic throwback for fans to reminisce about, the want for the academy has always been present. Whether you like Nuno or not, he has given youth players game time. Yes, to an extent he’s had little choice given squad size and availability but he has done it. Potts, Marshall, Mayers, Earthy and Scarles have all been given minutes so far in the premier league. There’s not been two keepers on the bench and they’ve been given a chance over senior players, so it’s not just been for the sake of it. I respect the fact they’ve been trusted and I hope it continues. However, the criticism and abuse Ollie Scarles has suffered since the Fulham game is downright disgraceful in my opinion. We want young players to be given a chance but don’t expect them to make a mistake? He played well throughout the game, perhaps had a few iffy moments but no more than any other player. His instant regret and reaction told everyone he knew what he’d done and the consequences of it. He didn’t need to be angrily criticised by fans in the stadium and then on social media after the game. I’m not saying wrap the lad in cotton wool but when he’s visibly upset he needs an arm round him and support, not a barrage of abuse and his face rubbed in it. Yes this is the big leagues, where players gain praise and criticism in equal measure, but there’s a point where some reactions go too far. Freddie Potts is a fan favourite and has come from the academy, would he have garnered the same reaction if it had been him and not Scarles? What was also disappointing was the lack of support from his fellow pros. Only Kyle Walker-Peters was seen offering support and guidance after the game, not our so called captain and supposed leader Jarrod Bowen, who himself missed a fantastic opportunity to give us the lead. I remember when a certain Declan Rice made a mistake which led to Arsenal scoring the winner against us in 2018. Joe Hart was in goal and instantly gave him support and advice rather than remaining silent and annoyed. Rice said that was a huge factor in him putting it behind him and learning from it rather than letting it consume him. It’s interesting that a mistake leading to us conceding garners more harsh reaction than the attacking players missing multiple chances to score. Goalkeepers have said it for years, nobody remembers the saves you make as much as the goals you concede. Bowen, Wilson, Summerville etc all failed to convert and have us out of sight before Fulham scored but Scarles is the reason we lost? I’m not having it. What message does it send out to academy players? Don’t make any mistakes or you’ll be crucified? I can understand senior, experienced pros who’ve been brought in on multi million pound transfer fees copping the brunt for bad performances or mistakes but not young lads, especially ones that are genuine supporters of the club who are already nervous, worried about messing up, potentially costing their team and knowing even an average, safe performance won’t be enough to keep them in the team. I get supporters are angry, fed up and scared about the clubs predicament and it’s probably only natural to aim frustrations, but after such longing for youth to be used it’s shame when appreciation and support turns to resentment. - Luc

The fact that currently our most senior LB is 20 with a handful of games under his belt is a joke. Scarles will be hung out to dry by some, but in reality he had a good game, if we had some experience on the bench we probably sub him off with 10 to go & he gets a standing ovation
