Google's spam update may have turned on them. Their own page title + site name has been getting rewritten in the SERP showing an online casino. Multiple posts in Google subreddits last night by people thinking they'd been compromised. #SpamUpdate #GoogleUpdate #SEO

Saw my subreddit analyzing my twitter activity debating if I'd ever upload again. I'm okay, and I do appreciate the encouragement and concern years later. Lengthy project. Basically done, just final remarks + leftover revisions Shooting for the next 3 days.

@rustybrick Or that yeah. SEMrush lets you view an archived SERP for specific keywords, and I was able to confirm it there, which rules out anything like that.

@danseoguy this stuff comes up from time to time; often it is resolved quickly or it is a browser extension malware that causes it.

@EldarCohen31603 Seeing it in the SERP myself freaked me out a little. My first thought was that it was a compromised browser extension.

@danseoguy This whole Google spam update situation is wild. The irony isn't lost on me that an update meant to combat spam might have caused its own wave of confusion, with Google itself rewriting titles to something completely unrelated. Seeing posts pop up in Google subreddits about people feeling compromised really highlights how unsettling this must have been for users. It’s a real head-scratcher.

@danseoguy Seen this too. Before assuming a hack, check (1) Search Console → URL Inspection “Google-selected canonical/title”, (2) cached HTML vs live, (3) external links anchoring “casino”. Title rewrites often follow on-page ambiguity + anchor spam.

This post is ONLY for SEOs who actually do SEO and love it. I've put together a re-build of the leaked GOOGLE CONTENT WAREHOUSE documentation and applied "probabalistic" weighting to factors. This is SPECULATIVE as in, it's not certain, I do not know HOW Google uses or applies each thing - no one does, and that's what makes it fun. ENJOY! seo-datawarehouse.com If you like and appreciate the content a link from your website wouldn't go a miss :)

@Charles_SEO @Charles_SEO The spam update has turned on them. I've been seeing Google .com's site name and page titles displaying an online casino's domain name. At least 6 posts on Reddit last night by people thinking they've been compromised.

Google just dropped a spam update AND a core update in the same week... And from the competitive SERPs I'm mostly tracking, have just rewarded MORE black hat techniques 🎩 Exhibit A: Google is now rewarding FAKE parasites 🤣 - A FAKE local news site from my home city registered 5 years ago - Almost entirely AI-generated content - ZERO Backlinks (All Telegram Spam) - No Google News approval - FAKE editorial team, authorship or about us (NICE REAL WORLD EEAT VALIDATION) - ONLY launched casino affiliate pages at the end of January - Traffic has EXPLODED since ($400k/mo according to Ahrefs - Likely $1m/mo+ in commissions...) - Traffic value has TRIPLED in March alone during these latest updates... This is EXACTLY the type of page Google says its spam policies target: Third-party affiliate content on a site with no topical authority in gambling, no editorial expertise, and low quality generated filler content. And yet it's not just surviving the spam update, it's THRIVING in them, and seemingly doing the exact same during the core update too. At some point you have to stop listening to what Google SAYS the updates do and start looking at what the SERPs ACTUALLY show. I genuinely can't tell if Google's spam team doesn't know this exists (and a LOT more), or if their systems literally can't detect it because the root domain passes the trust threshold. The algo might be so far gone, they have really lost control of the black box and are just waiting for AI "to fix this" 🙃

I've always wondered if Google's systems treat their own pages the same way as the rest of the web, or if they have their own internal crawling/indexing system and set things like their site name statically.
