In the beginning of this Millenium, Time-Resolved (TR) PIV with kHz acquisition rate emerged thanks to technological progress. TR PIV provided experimental results for validating Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes. #FluidDynamics #ParticleImageVelocimetry #Turbulence

The first commercial Stereo PIV system was introduced in 1998. It made it possible to measure all three velocity components in a plane, using two cameras with overlapping fields of view. The measurement plane no longer needed to be parallel to the flow. #ParticleImageVelocimetry

The first commercial #TowingTank #PIV system was delivered in 1997. New, compact pulsed Nd:YAG lasers made it possible to integrate the laser, light sheet optics and camera in a sealed casing that could be entirely submerged or mounted on a towing carriage. #FluidDynamics

FlowMap, introduced in 1994, was the first commercial digital Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system. Previously, typically one image per day was recorded with wet film PIV. With digital PIV, the measurement rate exploded to 10 image pairs per second! #ParticleImageVelocimetry

FlowLite was introduced in the late 1990's. It was a turn-key fiber-optical LDA probe connected to a box containing a Helium-Neon laser, beamsplitter and frequency shifting optics and the fiber-optical connection to the probe. Later, models with 2 lasers were introduced.

The FiberFlow optics revolutionized LDA when it was launched in 1988. It was compact and easy to set up for 1, 2 or 3 velocity components. Its watertight, lightweight probes were easily moved around without needing a massive traversing mechanism.

In 1987 a new technique for measuring droplet size and velocity, Phase Doppler Anemometry (PDA), emerged. The first generation was big, heavy and difficult to align with separate optics for each photomultiplier. Read about today's PDA systems ▶ ow.ly/XVuk50LqCY3
