Take Your Kid To Work Day 1993. You get lost between your dad's desk and the Coke machine and wander nervous and dreamy into a conference room. His two goofy friends and the woman who thought she had candy at her desk but it turned out she didn't are absolutely shredding in there

I got rid of Twitter on my phone but left Bluesky, so now when I reach for it I can only access the most anodyne content there is. It's been great for me. I have no idea what's in the Discover tab and I hope to never find out

This is actually what's good about Bluesky. If you only follow people you know and like and stay on "Following" you can just post Facebook status stuff all day and interact with your friends instead of voluntarily pan-frying yourself every 10 minutes

@Chris_arnade I was reading through him in order from Roderick Hudson and got hung up on Wings of the Dove, but I loved the stuff in the middle—Portrait of a Lady, Princess Casamassima, The Tragic Muse, What Maisie Knew. You get some of the late James manner but not too much

Started reading a Henry James book (Ambassadors) and he uses absurdly complex sentences to describe the simplest things, without anything gained beyond confusion. They aren't even lyrical, and often outright clunky.

Doing little things like that totally naturally and doing those same little things while thinking "well at least *I* understand that we owe something to each other!!!" looks the same to an outside observer, so if it helps you return the shopping carts I say go for it

Not leaning back, returning shopping carts, cleaning communal kitchen spaces, etc must be its own reward. You don't get reimbursed with the chance to do your own antisocial stuff later. That's why it's critical to think "I am a very special boy" while you're doing it

The easy and unsatisfying answer is that I don't really lean back myself but you have to be OK with other people doing it to you since it is quite obviously allowed. You don't get to have strong opinions about living in a society + then also buy something called the Knee Defender
The New Yorker@NewYorker

On August 24, 2014, James Beach, a six-foot-one businessman from Denver, was returning from Moscow when he deployed the Knee Defender—“a $22 gadget,” the Associated Press reported, “that attaches to a passenger’s tray table and prevents the person in front from reclining.” The woman in front of him, unable to lean back, flagged a flight attendant. From there, events spiralled. Beach removed the Knee Defender, but then became upset when the woman reclined forcefully, risking damage to his computer. He confronted her, pushed her seat forward, and tried to reinstall his device, at which point, he said, she turned around and threw her soda at him. The plane was diverted to Chicago, where it was met by police, and news coverage of the event led to conversations about reclining one’s airplane seat. “The bottom line is that reclining is a social act in an environment of social stress. It involves deciding whether to inflict your will on someone else, and enduring or resisting the effects of someone else’s decision,” Joshua Rothman writes. @WB_Baskerville Malcolm Harris believes you should only own a few dozen books but one of them should be the one he wrote that is called "Shit Is Fucked Up and Bullshit"

@franzsherbert My kids spent about 30 minutes tonight attempting to sing "Make 'Em Laugh" from Singin' in the Rain to each other. I think showing them old movies I think they'll like has been my single most successful "make parenting easier" campaign to date

I get him on the Wisconsin thing, though. I try to say it like Lindsay does to mess with her and it never works

@Jmanvelez Oh yeah I was a total Dreamcast dead-ender as a kid. Nobody could talk about the PS2 without me explaining the concept of Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment

Rivers Cuomo is the true heir to Brian Wilson, a weird little guy with a supernatural knack for pop melody. No one’s happy about it, not us & certainly not Rivers. Brian isn’t either but that’s because he’s in a purgatory where he can’t listen to Shortnin' Bread for 10000 years

Honestly I get daydreaming about this kind of thing but many of these people were also very unhappy. That used to be the main thing we wrote novels about. The problem is inside you

Bought a button-down just like that one at Goodwill the other day. Now it's just a matter of figuring out which novelty tie that's also at Goodwill I should pair with it
