Today, we share a difficult update: Wayru Inc. and the Wayru Foundation will cease operations by the end of this year. We started with the dream of democratizing internet access through decentralization, and while we achieved monumental milestones, the reality of the startup ecosystem is challenging. Despite our best efforts to scale and monetize our technology, we did not achieve sustainable Product-Market Fit or the funding needed to continue competing in the current landscape. Our priority now is to honor the work accomplished and the community that stood by us. To ensure our vision endures, we are making the following transitions: • Open Source Legacy: We refuse to let years of innovation vanish. We are organizing our technology for public release on GitHub, allowing the Wayru vision to live on through other builders in the ecosystem. • Hardware and Social Impact: We are committed to ensuring our hardware does not end up as e-waste. We are evaluating options to repurpose existing devices for projects like Orion and/or Helium. Furthermore, all equipment currently in our warehouse will be donated to provide free connectivity in low-income neighborhoods. • Operations Wind-down: Our networks and platforms will progressively enter inactivity starting today. The main platform will officially shut down on December 30th, 2025. Manuals for firmware updates and hardware repurposing will be published through this account in the coming weeks. To everyone who deployed a hotspot, believed in open connectivity, and joined us on this adventure: Thank you.
