I think a key point that is often overlooked or misunderstood with these situations is that we are not talking about a zero-sum game. Elon did not get $840 billion by taking it from someone else. Much of his created wealth was not already in the economy. Same thing Steve Jobs did with the iPhone. He created wealth that benefited a massive population in the world by providing an amazing device that puts remarkable power in the palm of their hands. Apple sold 3 billion iPhones because people made the rational decision that it is a fair trade to purchase that device to improve their lives. We need those super “earth movers” continuing operate in an environment where they can deliver innovations that improve the overall wealth of world. The massive wealth gap is a complex issue that needs innovative ideas to address. But let’s not fall into the trap of thinking that “when Elon gets richer, it comes out of my hide”.

Bill Maher’s rich guests look like deer in headlights when he asks what the solution is to Elon Musk becoming worth 2.7% of the U.S. GDP. MAHER: “Forbes came out this week with their richest list.” “Musk - $840 billion.” “What should we do when people have this much money?” “I know communism doesn’t work, and neither does advanced socialism. But what we have now, I can’t make the case that’s working either.” “What is the answer to this income inequality problem that we have?” Anthony Scaramucci and Lloyd Blankfein stare at each other with the look that says: “You wanna try and answer this question?” MAHER: “Next question.”

I can’t recall watching a more intense championship game. I asked Grok to evaluate Hellebuyck’s gold medal game performance: “Hellebuyck’s 41 saves on 42 shots in ~65-70 minutes (regulation + short OT) isn’t the volume king, but the .976 SV% on high-quality chances against elite NHL talent—while stealing a win when outplayed—ranks among the most impressive single-game championship performances. It’s often compared to Roy’s marathon shutout or Craig’s Miracle for legacy impact, with U.S. teammates calling it generational. Bottom line: Hellebuyck’s outing is historic and elite—a record-breaker in the Olympic gold-medal (championship) context, with efficiency and clutch factor that place it alongside all-time greats like Roy, Miller, and Craig. It wasn’t just volume; it was dominance under pressure in a best-on-best final against a powerhouse opponent.”

It is also interesting to look at medical procedures that are NOT typically covered by insurance. A good example is LASIK. The cost of LASIK surgery has remained remarkably stable and has even gone down in real dollars when you consider inflation. This is a data point that supports the value of what happens when you remove the influence and opaqueness of the third-party payer system.

The optimists and pessimists both have a point, to an extent. What I keep coming back to is this chart. Western societies have profoundly buggered up the supply of critical goods and services, whilst at the same time producing a technological cornucopia. Trick is to make the red stuff behave more like the blue stuff. This is both a technological and a political problem.

There is a structural problem when ZERO MLB umpires ever get sent back down to the minors for poor performance. Has that ever happened? My brief research indicates that this has never happened - never. If they have a guaranteed job once they reach the majors, what do we expect that kind of system to produce? Imagine how umpires would approach their profession IF the system were changed such that the bottom 20% of umpires each year get sent back to the minor leagues. The current system that virtually guarantees their job security is fundmentally flawed.

I don’t understand @gmc and their obsession with those oversized 24” wheels on the EV pickup trucks! I would be interested in either the Sierra EV Denali or Silverado EV RST - EXCEPT — both only come with 24” wheels. Then if I go down to a lower trim Silverado LT, I start out with MUCH better 18” wheels. But then if I want to add the midgate with pass-through option, AGAIN I am forced to also have those 24” wheels. I would love to see the venn diagram that shows the intersection of “people who want to drive a pickup truck” and “people who love 24” wheels”. Who are these people??? I think you are missing the mark. You have lost me. I am not driving around in a pickup truck with 24” wheels. @ChevyTrucks @chevrolet.

It is interesting to look at a medical procedure that has not historically been covered by insurance. LASIK eye surgery is a good example of this. Look at what the historical cost is for that procedure. It has come down over the years. Is there an example of a procedure that is covered by insurance that has actually come down in cost? It doesn’t feel like that would happen because the consumer is disconnected from the actual price when the insurance company is in the middle. So as we make decisions on procedures, we are not basing it on cost. That is not a great model for fostering an efficient market. Something needs to change with this model.

The current system is incredibly inefficient, providing mediocre medical care at a high price

As a hobby, @elonmusk should purchase the #Yankees and have a little side-flex competing against Cohen and his #Mets. The Yankees have never been the same since George Steinbrenner died. Make Yankees Great Again! I love this interview where George was asked if he is a graceful loser. His response: “you show me a good loser and I will show you a loser”. Classic. Love him or hate him, George was always entertaining. And he knew how to win!
