Just FYI: the last chemical attack on a ship was in 1943 and was largely accidental. Any adversary breaching LOAC to use chemical munitions in the present day isn't going to limit themselves to respiratory agents- they'd deploy neurotoxins no mask can inhibit or stop.

@amycoplan @halbritz @snlyngaas Spoken like a civilian…. In the event of a chemical attack a service member cannot effectively seal a gas mask or respirator. This is but one of several reasons you should have a clean shaven face.

@American1068 @amycoplan @halbritz @snlyngaas There are CBRN countermeasures that don't require facial seal on a respirator. Here's another question: Why is it that pretty much all other modern navies allow sailors to grow beards? What do they know that Hegseth doesn't?

@darkst @amycoplan @halbritz @snlyngaas That’s a nonsense question. When was the last time we faced a chemical attack period. What matters is it’s possible. You practice and prepare for it, you cannot properly seal a mask with a beard. Respirators as well when fire fighting may be compromised with a beard.

Amid the tenuous situation between the US and Iran in recent weeks, Pete Hegseth boarded a US Navy ship for what was supposed to be a routine visit with sailors. The visit was marred by facial hair, @snlyngaas reports. Shortly after the visit, Pentagon officials held a series of meetings in which they told subordinates that Hegseth was closely monitoring agencies’ progress on the beard policy and other workplace changes: cnn.com/2026/07/10/pol…

Yesterday, at a meeting of the Global Foresight Council in Paris, we discussed security. War has changed dramatically over the past five years. At the start of the full-scale invasion, I refused to evacuate and remained in Kyiv, which the Russians were trying to encircle. Back then, the war took the form of a column of Russian tanks storming my city. But today, it’s a completely different war. It’s a war of unmanned vehicles, the use of AI, massive drone attacks, complete battlefield transparency, and rapid-fire long-range weapons. All the military experience of the last century is simply irrelevant. Today, it’s not just military power that takes center stage, but a society’s capacity for resistance. You can have modern equipment and weapons, but if the country lacks people willing to defend it, that won’t help you much. Likewise, if the people on the home front are unable to withstand the onslaught of war, even the most experienced army cannot hold back the enemy without support from the home front. This winter, with temperatures at minus 25 degrees, millions of people in Ukraine lived without heat, electricity, or water. It’s hard for me to convey just how difficult it was. But all the banks were open, parliament held sessions, classes took place in schools, and hospitals performed surgeries. This is what the world calls Ukrainian resilience. But in reality, this is “total defense” itself. When a simple action becomes an act of resistance. People matter. Without working with people - those who take their freedom and security for granted - neither a powerful economy, nor military potential, nor even nuclear weapons will save developed democracies. Because if you are rich and weak, in a world where the international system of peace and security is dysfunctional, you will be plundered. And I see almost no frank discussion of this in developed democracies. Only a few countries stand as rare exceptions. In the rest, a psychological mechanism of denial dominates - the idea that “we are unique, so something like that simply cannot happen to us.”

Humanists, ACLU, SPLC as well. Every single former civil rights org is now laser focused on making people who say that men can't get pregnant out to be Nazis.

Do you have any idea, @chiaracapraro, how much damage you and your colleagues have done to the reputation of what was once a globally respected organization, dedicated to free speech and support for prisoners of conscience? It’s unforgivable.

Not true. Reservoir Dogs is actually an uncredited remake of the great Ringo Lam's City On Fire. Tarantino never admitted it but you can Google it. The end is basically a shot-for-shot remake of the original.

Relentless Russian disinformation and a saturated global news cycle have blinded Western audiences to the horrifying scale of the war in Ukraine. Despite years of media coverage, almost everyone outside of Ukraine massively underestimates the catastrophic human toll of the conflict (including the number of civilian deaths). Even well-meaning, pro-Ukrainian Europeans frequently fall into the trap of viewing this as a relatively clean war with minimal civilian targeting. The data tells a vastly different story, with total casualties over the last four and a half years reaching an estimated 2 million people, roughly split between two-thirds Russian and one-third Ukrainian. While the conflicts are fundamentally different, a purely numerical look at the war in Gaza helps illustrate this unseen magnitude (because most people are aware that many civilians died in Gaza). In Gaza, more than two years of war resulted in at least 75,811 reported total deaths by May 2026. Meanwhile, the Uppsala Conflict Data Program indicates that the brief three-month siege of Mariupol alone claimed between 27,000 and 88,000 lives (mostly civilians). Despite having a population five times smaller than Gaza, Mariupol likely endured a similar or even higher death toll in a fraction of the time. Zooming out, the total casualty figure for the war in Ukraine is equal to the entire population of the Gaza Strip. This is not a moral comparison but a reality check for a Western public distracted by competing crises. Moscow actively hides its atrocities and masks civilian deaths within occupied zones, but the sheer volume of victims demands that the West finally acknowledge the true scale of this genocide
