Kalau hampir satu angkatan lulus cum laude, itu bukan lagi tanda “luar biasa” — itu tanda standar penilaian yang mulai kehilangan taringnya. Cum Laude → IPK 3.50 – 3.79 Magna Cum Laude → IPK 3.80 – 3.89 Summa Cum Laude → IPK 3.90 – 4.00 Secara konsep, predikat ini harusnya eksklusif. Karena kata “with honors” muncul untuk menandai performa yang benar-benar menonjol dibanding mayoritas. IPK tinggi tetap bagus. Tapi kalau semua orang exceptional, lama-lama tidak ada yang benar-benar exceptional.
