Barely a week after Seyi Makinde announced his presidential ambition, he received massive support, with many predicting a major shift in the politics of the South-West. Then, suddenly, terrorists reportedly killed a teacher and kidnapped 45 children in Oyo State, releasing two videos in less than 24 hours. Fifty-six days later, following what many have described as a suspicious operation by the Nigerian Armed Forces, the children were released. The incident has left many Nigerians asking questions: Were these truly the same children who were kidnapped? Was there more to the story than the public has been told? The school principal has since become a prominent public figure, granting multiple interviews, while politicians have publicly donated millions of naira to her. That, too, has raised more questions than answers. My concern is that the endgame could be the declaration of a state of emergency in Oyo State, followed by the appointment of a military administrator for 6–9 months. If that were to happen, it could effectively end Seyi Makinde's presidential ambition and weaken the South-West's political challenge to BAT. These are the reasons I question whether this wave of terrorism is purely a security issue or whether politics may also be at play.
