Specifically, the money the U.S. government has borrowed in credit markets, expressed as a percentage of GDP, or the size of the U.S. economy. This does not include the debts the United States has implicitly assumed – such as Social Security, Medicare trust funds, or any federal employee or military trust funds – where the government owes government or pension benefits that haven’t yet been borrowed. This is just the money that the government has pulled out of credit markets so that it could spend it directly. Economists consider this the more relevant measure of debt-to-GDP than you might have heard the gross national debt, which is like 36 trillion dollars right now [June 2025]. This measure is about 30 trillion dollars. Still a sizable sum, especially if you consider that we accumulated this debt over the past 250 years to kind of foreshadow where we're heading right now over the next 10 years. […] Without Congress authorizing any new spending over the next 10 years, we are locked in to borrowing an additional 20 trillion dollars… If the big [beautiful] bill passes [note: yes], that amount will likely go up by about 25 percent to 25 trillion dollars. Just to put that into context: we've borrowed 30 trillion dollars and it took us 250 years to do so. And now we're talking about borrowing 25 trillion dollars over just the next 10 years.
