OK, so I screwed up my calendar and it turns out the test that will look for “minimal residual disease” in my blood is tomorrow at 11:30 am and not on April 30! So prayer warrior friends, if you would send one up for me for negative test between now and then, I would be very grateful!

@megbasham I suggest to people that using cancer as a weight loss method should consider liposuction— it’s a lot less invasive

Can’t recommend cancer generally, but being underweight by about 10 pounds and FINALLY getting your appetite back is pretty fun!

Oh and I just realized I did that confusing medical thing where I said positive without clarifying. Positive meaning good! Scan still clean, still praying for the best for April 30 blood test, and everything’s looking good right now! 😄

So I will confess that I broke down and cried a little bit when I saw @DouthatNYT’s interview with @BenSasse. While going through cancer treatment, I have had such a strong preoccupation with how it would impact my looks. I have wanted to keep it together and maintain an attractive front as well as I can. I saw Sasse here and it just made me feel how stupid such a petty, vain concern has been when the real fight we’ve been facing is whether my daughters will have to finish growing up without me! (and right now, all signs are positive there, and we’re thanking God!) But this is actually one of the reasons I sent in a couple requests to interview Sasse. Because I’m wondering how much this is a difference between men and women thing and how much it may just be a Christian maturity thing. I’d have some deeper questions too, but I do think the way a Christian who is a husband and father faces cancer may be different than how a wife and mother does. And you would approach stage four in a different spiritual posture than a terminal diagnosis in some ways. Anyway, I just feel like there would be lots for us to talk about!

Today I’m reading the Bible telling of the young boy, Samuel, hearing God’s voice. As a little girl, this story captured me. I would close my eyes and listen so hard to see if God would speak to me. I was always willing.

Austin is my son’s best friend. Austin is engaged to Reagan. Regean is my daughter, Silje’s roommate. Austin, Reagan, and Silje all work at the same church in CA. I was also Austin’s homeschool tutor from 7th grade to high school graduation. Austin called me last night at 10:30pm. He never calls me. Me: Hey Austin, everything ok? Austin: Hey Gretchen, I am just calling because I got stitches in my face today, and I was wondering, in honoring of my suffering, would you name your new dog Babushka? Me: did Silje put you up to this? Austin: no Regean did. We all want that name. Me: what’d ya do to your face Austin? Austin: Pastor Nathan said it could go either way, stitches or not but then Reagan came home from work and made me go in. Me: this is why married men live longer. Austin: so you’ll name the dog Babushka? Me: well I have to meet the dog first. But I’ll tell you what. I’ll give 10 extra points toward Babushka. Austin: yes! Can Reagan have 10 extra points too? Reagan: hi Gretchen! Me: yes, I’ll give Reagan 10 extra points towards Babushka too.
