Our trusty #volunteers went out yesterday to clear the ivy off a World War II pillbox at #Hamstead near #Newbury #KennetAndAvon What a satisfying job! 😀 They are part of the GHQ Line Blue, a defensive stop line constructed to protect Britain against expected invasion in 1940.

38 boats thru Hillmorton today peeps after a very slow start. Once again we had the filmcrew from @narrowescapes , second time last 3 weeks. At this rate we'll have to watch the whole series to see ourselves. Here's a thought, why not an episode on the volunteers. 😃😂🥳😎

@CanalRiverTrust @HillmortonLocks Award winning Conservator Volunteers on the Kennet & Avon have refurbished paddle gearing on 30 locks. Refurbished boaters information boards and rebuilt a sluice that will put 1m litres of water a day back into the canal.

Our volunteer lock keepers across the network have helped hundreds over boaters through lock flights. In recent weeks, at Hillmorton Locks on the Oxford Canal, our volunteers have assisted an average of nearly 50 boats a day! 💪 📷 @HillmortonLocks pic.twitter.com/HQCzKx2YJk

@CRTWalesandSW "Ashing the gates" is a traditional method which was used in the canal's industrial heyday. The technique involves pouring the ash into the canal just above a lock. The flow of water then sucks the ash into the small gaps in the gates allowing them to form a watertight seal.
