There is a very large contingent of people who laugh gleefully when one of Elon Musk's rockets explode on takeoff or a submersible with wealthy adventurers is lost to the sea. These are people whose envy and dissatisfaction with their own mediocre, unimpressive lives have driven them to despise anyone who does anything different, bold, or daring. They take pleasure in failure because they will never have any successes of their own to celebrate. I guess pathetic assholes of this type have always existed. But it worries me that they are so numerous in our culture, and that over time they are only becoming more and more cartoonishly sadistic.

@peterboghossian a perfect summary of this incredibly trite film. i would only add that my 21 and 17 year olds loved it as much as i loved dances with wolves 30 years ago. garbage at 50 (and it was garbage) can be magnificent at 20. people will always need to discover things for themselves

Just walked out of Avatar: TWoW, a film that aspires to make you feel bad about humanity and being human. It plays off of tired tropes about indigenous people living in harmony with the land while genocidal white colonizers revel in brutality and cruelty. Boring and tired.

So. Again. Russians have spent a shitload of very expensive and disposable missiles (over 30 against Kyiv alone) to cut most of Ukraine off from electricity. By the end of the day, power grid restored in most regions, again. Any ideas what Russians are trying to achieve here?
