@Pitchingbadger It’s the Tobin show… One of the grittiest things I’ve ever seen. Just went out there time and time again and let his nuts hang. Tobins outing yesterday was a representation of this teams year. Went out and fought time and time again no matter who counted us out…

Today I watched a pitcher at UTD throw 144 pitches in a 9 inning game and lose, and it reminded me “how can you not be a romantic about baseball.” Here’s why: —Rocky opener - for Pitcher —- he’s down 3 by the time I arrived to watch the game with some friends because who my favorite college pitcher is on the Billy Goats Gruff (St. Edwards :-) —4th inning Pitcher is in trouble again. RO 2nd 3rd with 1 out - Pitcher Ks the next two batters. —By the 5th he’s over 85 pitches and I’m thinking he’s done. He faces 4 batters and we are on to the 6th. Surely they pull him now. —6th — Pitcher gives up 1, but the Comets score 2 — so it’s 4-2 (2nd run is a bang bang play at the plate - Comet safe). Time for a new pitcher. Even the HS football coach saddled with coaching the freshman baseball team knows you pull this guy. Reliever has been up since the 6th and we have already had one mound visit. —Nope — Pitcher comes out again in the 7th - and he’s gassed. He’s locating and spinning, but it’s slow. 7th goes 3 up 3 down. Now I realize he’s a senior (yes - it was Senior Day - but I was late to the game so no clue) so the Coach is giving him the option of going out on his shield for the last time. —Pitcher comes out for the 8th — 3 up 3 down, and you can feel the UTD energy from across the field. This games means nothing to them in terms of moving on. It’s the last of their season despite being the best team in their conference (I’m reliably informed). But because UTD moved up to D2 they can’t play in the conference championship of the NCAA D-2 championships so this is it for all of their Srs. (Stupid rule IMO but the rule committee didn’t ask me). — Pitcher comes out for the 9th — he’s completely done — for you old heads like me — He’s Kevin Costner in the 9th inning in for Love of the Game. He’s got nothing but the grit it takes to end your career on your own terms. —9th goes 2 up 2 down, and the Coach calls a mound visit. Rumblings from the St. Eds fans (parents that made the trip) “Why a mound visit with 2 outs, no one on, in the 9th?” My friend tells them “He’s a senior.” I hear a collective “Ahh” as they realize that some day (if they are very very lucky) they may watch their son go out like this. Surrounded by his defense I don’t know what was said by the Comet’s coach to Pitcher. It would be a disservice to guess. I told my friend - somewhere in the stands are his parents. The umpire has to break up this visit. —3 pitches - 3 strikes and we go to the bottom of the 9th with the Comets bench going wild. You can feel the energy — they want to win this game for Pitcher in the bottom of the 9th. —Comets get 2 on but fall short. Pitcher’s last career game is a loss, 2-4. But he left it all on the field in a game where that so rarely happens. On a cloudy, muggy day in Dallas, Texas Pitcher reminded me “how can you not be a romantic about baseball.” @BluebookBeede -
