Today, I want to honour the life of Harry Zborowski, my great-uncle. Through My Thesis Harry: The Documented Tribulation of One Auschwitz Survivor, Daniel Burns created a painstaking, 332-page work grounded in primary sources that preserves one man’s testimony with rigor and care. Harry was married to my great-aunt, Bela. She and my grandfather survived the Shoah. Harry and his wife, Bela, later sponsored my father to come to Canada - an act of generosity that shaped our family’s future. Harry was born in Siewierz, Poland, near Zawiercie. On October 18, 1943, he was on the last transport from Zawiercie to Auschwitz. Tattooed 157837, he endured brutal conditions in the Gollenschau granite quarry, a subcamp of Auschwitz-Birkenau. His survival was not abstract; it was physical, specific, and unimaginably hard. And yet, Harry lived with extraordinary vitality. He celebrated his 99th birthday. He drove until months before his passing, without eyeglasses! Every morning, he rode a stationary bike for 30 minutes, followed by stretching exercises. Strength, discipline, and dignity were woven into his daily life. There is a photograph of Harry, Bela and my grandfather and grandmother. In that image is everything Holocaust remembrance must hold together: loss and continuity, trauma and life, memory and responsibility. On this day, we remember not only the six million, but the individuals - by name, by number, by story. Documentation matters. Testimony matters. And the obligation to remember, to teach, and to stand against antisemitism and dehumanization in all forms remains ours. May Harry’s memory be a blessing. Daniel B.
