Just found the piece of paper I wrote on when the doc called to tell me they found tumors in Jan ‘17. This was why my back was in so much pain. This red square was me trying to comprehend the dimensions on the first of three masses in my abdomen. The wild thing was that the doc wanted me to come into his office in the morning to have the conversation face to face. While I appreciated his desire to have a tough conversation like that in person, him not wanting to tell me what they found was everything I needed to know. After asking him to just shoot me straight, right then on the phone at the end of his workday, he proceeded to say it was a roughly 8cm x 8cm x 8cm tumor and located on my spine, compressing my aorta and vena cava. My cancer was back. Did I mention Joanna was 7 months pregnant? More measurements poured out from him for additional tumors throughout. I never wrote them down…shell shocked but anxious to go to war. I walked out of my office to show the square to Joanna. Didn’t even say anything. She immediately knew and just embraced me. Before that phone call, I could imagine the future with my wife and kids. As soon as I saw that square (really a cube), everything felt so uncertain. A day by day battle. It felt that way for nearly two years. And now…we are approaching 7 years since this phone call and that drawing. My feet still hit the floor every morning with immense gratitude. 🙏 🙌🤗 Thankful. Joyous. Full of peace, hope, and love. my dad used to have this great striped sweatshirt with the 88 cotton bowl patch on the arm that i stole from him and wore in middle school and high school i wonder if we still have that sweatshirt i gotta find it
