Don’t take it personally, Mom.
Cross cultural research suggests that “Dada” is very commonly the first person that babies identify by name. And the reason may actually be beautiful.
But first let’s explore the question of when a word is really a word.
Language development begins with cooing and the babbling of repetitious syllables. “Dada” is very commonly one of these initial vocalizations, even before the child actually associates it with a particular meaning. (Sorry, Dad, but it’s probably not an expression of preference.)
Around 9-12 months, however, babies do start associating meaning with sounds. And dad frequently IS first in line here. Why?
One theory is that babies are so closely bonded to their mothers early in life that they actually view their mothers as an extension of themselves.
This line of thinking suggests that Dad may be identified first because he’s the first person identifiable outside of this precious mother-baby unit.
So not only is the identification of fathers likely not an expression of preference, it actually may say something very special about just how closely mother and baby are bonded. And that’s amazing. ❤️
Who did your child identify first?

@notphlogiston @heymrsbond Yes! Writing the menu out weekly is great! Anyone with a spare few minutes can prep something!
English

@heymrsbond Then I would cook another round at Christmas break to get me through the rest of the year.
English

@heymrsbond I cooked freezer meals ahead in the summer and that covered 2 nights a week. The rest was lots of easy stuff (salads, pasta, etc). Also, use curbside pickup to buy groceries. Big time saver.

@findingmyquiet @k8roulette2 HS teacher here. My district did a teacher swap this year. I spent a day teaching 5th grade. It was eye opening. And exhausting.
English

@k8roulette2 And yet so many MS and HS teachers regard us as babysitters/placeholders until “the REAL learning happens.” Yes, someone has spoken those exact words to me in my career. Wish more people had a better understanding of a day in the life.

@melissaacarr HS math teacher. Thanks for considering!!

@Mr_Rablin Always fun to get the one hour lunch when the district leads PD. Sometimes even longer but then snap back to reality with a 40 minute lunch when I’m teaching and busy as hell.
