The games setting is a bit of a mixed bag of florida and japan, this is inspired by the fact that I live in florida but have also played shenmue

@DUSKdev I don't remember where, but I read that next project they were working on was new IP. Now it's gonna be either Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein between them and MachineGames.

To clarify, I don't mean "I wish Id would stop making Doom games" I mean "I wish Id could be allowed to make something other than Doom games"

So did the engine team get let go, or not? It's frustrating how much noise there is vs. signal on this sort of story. As I said on @thestanduppod, it's really hard to form an opinion on this stuff when all you get is vague and/or conflicting reports.

@ID_AA_Carmack The issue is that studios got mandate from higher ups to make stuff to boost the prestige of Game Pass, not to sell as many copies as possible, so the studios now take the blame for doing what they were told.

I have been trying to find something meaningful to say about the Id Software layoffs. My “Microsoft will probably be a good steward of the brand” statement isn’t aging well, and this is certainly going to dampen the mood of the founder reunion at QuakeCon next month. I’m saddened, but I can’t muster anger or outrage over it. I don’t have access to the books, but I suspect that Id Software was a marginal business from Microsoft’s perspective. I believe the reports that Minecraft revenues have been carrying several other studios. To continue being produced long term, games need to succeed, not just be beloved. Games are competing with every other option for spending your leisure time and money, and the competition is brutal. You can’t rule out the possibility that executives are idiots, but that shouldn’t be your default belief. I don’t think there is any obvious path that would have doubled the revenue from Id games. Could they have gotten more with a different pricing strategy? Could they have created more things for fans to buy? Could they have cost effectively marketed in a way that reached more players that would have loved and bought the games? Could they have changed the game designs and broadened the appeal to more players without alienating existing ones? Could they have produced the games at a lower cost, faster or cheaper? I really don’t know. The game isn’t over yet, and I hope the studio rallies through.

@Jonathan_Blow @cmuratori What about being in a union would make great engineers at id to suddenly, after 10+ years of doing that, stop making great engines?

Assuming the current reports are true, suffice to say I'm waiting to hear the supposed rationale for laying off one of the best game engine teams in the world. Even assuming you are switching all your projects to licensed engines, these same people would instantly be your most valuable programmers for working with and extending whatever engine you license.

FGED volumes 1 and 2 each had crowd funding campaigns that provided a way for supporters to get perks like acknowledgments in the books, autographed copies, and licenses to my software. I wasn't planning to run a campaign for FGED3, but I understand some people would still like access to these perks this time around, and I'd be willing to run a campaign to make them available. What do you think?

I’m happy to announce the release of a new open source 3D physics engine called Box3D. I’ve been working on this project for a few years now, but it represents over 20 years of experience writing physics engines for games. Read more here: box2d.org/posts/2026/06/…

@ocornut iirc that's part of the game concept. The base of the game are 4 puzzle games they took and drew upon, Promesst included. Thekla even paid off the creators of those games for rights to reuse them.

The "Promise" section is indeed inspired by Promesst and is the most fascinating section to me so far (interconnected puzzles). I'm excited about the full thing.

@SebAaltonen @sneha___03 Not arguing for the image in first tweet, just worth noting that for casual use 4GB is fine on linux. And I think Godot is kinda extra.

@SebAaltonen @sneha___03 I think Ubuntu is commonly regarded as bloated. Still, I run 24.04 on my old Thinkpad T430 with 4GB RAM and it's perfectly fine for net browsing and even light 3D Godot projects. Latest Fedora which I have on my PC has 4GB for min specs. Peoples favorite Mint requires only 2GB.

@WaterMuseum_ It's crazy to think that a PS3/360 era game is still unbeaten king in terms of urban open world design. And argument could be made that #2 belongs to GTAIV. All others seem somehow so *fake* in comparison.

@WaterMuseum_ I wish GTA had good gameplay, but I don't have my hopes high. I despise the way you control your character, I dislike *playing* most of it, but the worlds they craft are sooo good. I have tens, hundreds of hours just driving around and admire the craft.

I worry that GTA 6 will graphically/technically look 20 years ahead of everything else but still just play like a GTA 5.3
