Today on @bookclubpodhq Tabby & I explore Virginia Woolf's MRS DALLOWAY - for me, one of the finest novels of the last century.
We discuss the Twenties, modernism, nostalgia, shell-shock, sexuality - and of course the turbulent life of Woolf herself.

Continuing our series on 1915, today on @TheRestHistory we are out at sea, steaming across the Atlantic with THE LUSITANIA.
How & why did an ocean liner come to be sunk by a German U-boat - and as it really carrying contraband explosives?

@adrianmckinty @dcsandbrook Sandbrook's excellent at that. Cultural history makes the politics actually readable. Sold three copies last week to people who 'don't normally do history books.'
English

one of the reasons I love these books is because of the serious attention @dcsandbrook pays to cultural history as well as the politics
6 pages on Beyond The Fringe
18 pages (!) on the James Bond phenomenon
a couple of chapters on the BBC
its good stuff

English

@adrianmckinty @dcsandbrook Really good. Like an episode of The Rest is History, with even more details, in a book.
What could be better than that?
English

@adrianmckinty @dcsandbrook That whole series is enormously enjoyable, entertaining and informative. He writes beautifully.

@dcsandbrook Your comparison between Wilson and Starmer is incorrect.
Wilson far cleverer and politically astute. He actually kept to UK out of Vietnam, Starmer crumbled.Wilson's cabinet a much higher calibre

I really enjoyed this conversation about history and books with Ivan, a young Ukrainian podcaster from Zhytomyr.
Among other things, we discuss the Cold War, Putin, the Lord of the Rings and the Niffler, of Potterverse fame.

@dcsandbrook @bookclubpodhq Does this mean you and Tabby are now effectively formulating world economic policy?

@dcsandbrook @bookclubpodhq Said he listened to our podcast on the Hound of the Baskervilles. He read Denis Healy's autobiography as a teenager and it made him want to be a politician. Wrote to Healy and Healy wrote back to him. He has kept the letter on his desk ever since.
English

@RMcGreevy1301 @bookclubpodhq Wow! That is lovely to hear - thank you.
English

Just a heads up guys that the managing director of the World Bank Paschal Donohoe has name checked your Bookclub podcast at a talk he has given about the joys of reading. @dcsandbrook @bookclubpodhq

I'll be on @bbc5live shortly (following the Thomas Tuchel press conference) with Adrian Chiles and the great @dcsandbrook to discuss the Labour leadership, immigration stats, reality TV, politicians' running in short shorts and much more. Join us!

@dcsandbrook @bookclubpodhq @guardianculture Have fallen behind on the reading list - I think I can manage beloved or woman in white.
Which one should I choose?
English

Today on @bookclubpodhq we explore Toni Morrison's haunting novel BELOVED.
It's a ghost story, a reflection on the trauma of slavery and - at least according to @guardianculture - the second greatest novel ever written. But do Tabitha and I agree?

"And if you want to join our very own fractious political party ... a range of incredible benefits ... an annual conference", etc.

"Of course, listeners who want to skip ahead and find out the results of the Makerfield by-election and the effect it had on Keir Starmer's government, can find out *right now* if they are members of the UK's most popular movement for change, The Rest is History Club."
English

@jr_fee Probably not immediately, because we want to have a blend of different genres, but maybe one day.
English

@dcsandbrook, so, since your book club is apparently diving into more modern fantasy now, will you be taking on The Wheel of Time?
