This sounds this way because its in Lydian, what you’re calling the 3 chord is just the 1, were just not used to hearing music in lydian so we try to process it as minor or major

so many of these early tunes hovered around III, IV, V, VI chords; using the III instead of resolving to the tonic has a weird optimistic tension and nothing else in the 2010s underground used that harmonic language. i used to tell people i thought pc music sounded like handel

@MegaphonixMusic @KlezmerRouge i think this is a fundamental question of whether the melody or the harmony are the source of truth for what key something is in. personally think the key of a song is isomorphic to the melody's tonal centre, regardless of harmonization, but i was never much of a harmony guy

@KlezmerRouge @ddddddeon i’ve actually done this with my music, you make a “major”-coded melody and then harmonize it from the relative minor as the tonal center. it prevents it from sounding overly “sad” and is what most pop music uses these days
ultimately it’s still centered in the minor key tho

@jetskitosway2 i do get that it's often a matter of perspective and it's debatable what key something is in. so much music can be considered to be in either a minor key or its relative major depending on how you choose to hear it

it’s not really III these tunes are mostly using I in 1st pos, the tonic is still there, it just feels suspended by the inversion
