Imagine being the lead Interpol detective on this case for 5 years, staring at a wiretap, only to open X and see Jos at a gender reveal party with the Joint Chiefs of Staff

The Netherlands’ most wanted druglord recently had a baby with the daughter of Sierra Leone’s president and now runs his operation from there, having bought off the entire country, even appearing in photos with the country’s head of anti-drug enforcement

I’ll admit there’s a lot of truth here about the political timeline Mexico absolutely struggled to govern the northern frontier, the empresario system was real, and the Tejanos were UNDENIABLY neglected by Mexico City. But you lose me at “completely untamed.” You can't say the American man 'civilized' the land when the entire infrastructure of American ranching was plagiarized directly from the people who were already there. Never forget that when Anglo settlers showed up, they didn’t know how to herd cattle on an open range. They had to be taught by the Vaqueros. The tools, the saddle horn, the lasso, the roundup, the chaps.. even the literal horses and Longhorn cattle were all brought and perfected by Spanish and Mexican ranchers centuries prior. Saying Anglos built it from scratch ignores the fact that icons like Richard King literally went into Mexico in 1854 to recruit entire Vaquero families because Americans didn't have the expertise to run the land themselves. It wasn't a blank slate imo. It was an exchange of mastery. You can celebrate Anglo grit without erasing the literal blueprint they built on.
Chris Ward@MasterWambo

The fact that there is a blending of Spanish and Anglo culture where the two civilizations met in the southwest does not preclude the objective fact that the land was completely untamed, lawless and only very sparsely populated until the Anglos conquered it. In the case of Texas specifically, the entire state was built by the empresarios. There were some 2,000 Tejanos in all of Texas, and Mexico could not convince people to settle the land because of its isolation and inherent danger. Hell, they struggled to even civilize northern Mexico in what is now Sonora, Coahuila and Chihuahua. Then the Anglos came to Texas by the tens of thousands and killed and conquered and settled the place definitively. The Texians only ended up seceding from Mexico and taking it for themselves because of dereliction on the part of the Mexicans to actually provide anything in return for their taxes. Even most of the relatively few native Tejanos who didn't flee, ended up siding with the Texians in the war because they too were neglected. I'm not one with a bone to pick with Mexicans. I am generally fond of the people and have been around them my entire life. My family have been in Texas since its founding, some of which were ranchers whose children spoke Spanish and worked the land along the border. I don't have any interest in larping anything. But the way this discourse got started was because of a reddit-tier meme that all the Mexicans here today have been here all along, and they weren't. They are by and large post-1960s border crossers, and most Mexicans walking around in ostrich boots and cowboy hats are themselves larpers, no different than anyone else. It's completely uninteresting to have a pissing match over who invented the high rise cowboy cut jean. To the degree that this is Spanish and descendant of criollos, that is just cool and I like it even more. But I really don't care that the engraved belt buckle is "Hispanic", it doesn't change the fact that it was the AMERICAN man who civilized the southwest, conquered the Indian, worked the land and built the infrastructure as we know it today.
