It started with an image posted online that would lead you through step after step of these different puzzles. They lasted roughly 2 months each time and would have a distinct finish before they continued with a new puzzle the next year. There was this kind of structure to it. New players would be taught new things as they solved the puzzles. Each puzzle would get harder and harder in complexity. This gave the new puzzle solvers the tools they would need to move on to the next puzzle. This is how Cicada was designed. One of these tools taught was in regards to PGP. PGP is a type of cryptographic signature. Very early on Cicada taught people how to use key servers how to generate their own use public and private keys using PGP. So this became very important because Cicada would end up signing their puzzles with their PGP Key. In this way, they could stay anonymous and ensure that fakes or forgeries couldn't pop up and claim to be them. Puzzle solvers could ensure that they were actually working on an official Cicada puzzle through those keys. Because of these PGP Keys, we know that there has never been a puzzle after 2014. Enter D. D is a person who tries to solve a clock cipher from a 2017 Cicada 3301 puzzle. Keep in mind that this puzzle isn't signed with the PGP Key that was set up by Cicada 3301 to ensure that it actually was a real Cicada 3301 puzzle.
