Hence the unnamed "senior Iranian political official's" comments to Al Mayadeen that a Lebanon ceasefire will go into effect tonight for a week. Two possibilities: -That week, or more, will give Hezbollah enough reprieve to improve its position in Bint Jbeil. The longer the quiet, the better for Hezbollah. Bint Jbeil is encircled by the Israelis, but Hezbollah still predominates in a belt of nearby towns (see here: google.com/maps/d/u/0/vie…) and can likely draw in some reinforcements. That may deny Israel the ability to fully take the area, and thus preserve Hezbollah's coveted "image of victory." -Alternatively, if the fighting does not resume, then Hezbollah can claim it held off Israel until a ceasefire went into effect. Will this occur? Who knows. But here's what can be discerned with certainty. -Iran can't wait for a Lebanon ceasefire, because Hezbollah can no longer wait. Neither party also can't directly stop the Israelis. Direct talks to what end? To return to the status quo ante that allowed Hezbollah to rearm and regenerate? Lebanon has had twenty years to disarm Hezbollah — under different governments, different regional conditions. It never took a single serious action toward that end. Expecting some significant change from Lebanon now just because some Lebanese officials are dangling direct talks with the Israelis — a purely cosmetic action — is fantastical thinking and deliberate self-deception.
