ON THE CRISIS OF ATTACKS AGAINST DOCTORS IN NIGERIA AND THE TRAGIC ABDUCTION AND KILLING IN AUCHI, EDO STATE My fellow Nigerians, I speak today not as a distant observer, but as someone grieving with you, angry with you, and unwilling to stay silent while evil roams freely in our land. Nigeria is bleeding. Our doctors, those who heal the sick, deliver our children, treat our wounds and save our lives are now being hunted. This is not alarmism. This is documented reality. In Auchi, Edo State, Dr. Abu Babatunde, a young doctor serving at Edo State University Teaching Hospital, was abducted alongside his younger brother at the gate of his home on January 2, 2026. When the family could not meet ransom demands, his brother was brutally killed. Dr. Babatunde remains in captivity.
Just one day earlier, Dr. Osamaye, a resident doctor at Irrua Specialist Hospital, was kidnapped from his street. These are not isolated incidents. They are part of a dangerous and growing pattern. According to PUNCH Healthwise, using data from the Safeguarding Health in Conflict Coalition, over 100 healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, dentists and pharmacists have been kidnapped in Nigeria in the past five years, and at least 17 have been killed, based on police, military and media reports.
In 2024 alone, 35 health workers were kidnapped in 15 incidents, an increase from 24 in 2023. Victims were taken from hospitals, clinics, their homes, and while commuting to or from work. In 2025, abductions of medical personnel continued across Edo, Anambra, Abuja, Kaduna and other states. In Enugu State, the Nigerian Medical Association reported over 10 cases of kidnapping or violent attacks against doctors in just two months. This is not a coincidence. This is targeted violence against those who protect life. Why are doctors now prime targets?
The Association of Resident Doctors, confirmed by Punch Newspapers, has stated that kidnappers sometimes abduct doctors not only for ransom, but to force them to provide medical care for criminals and wounded fighters in captivity. Every time a doctor is kidnapped or killed, Nigeria’s fragile healthcare system weakens further. Our doctor-to-patient ratio is already dangerously low. Every loss pushes us closer to collapse. Let us speak plainly: the state has failed.
Security assurances have become empty words. “We are working on it” has translated into more kidnappings, more funerals, more families raising ransom money while perpetrators roam free. Nigeria is fast becoming one of the most unsafe places in the world for doctors to live, work and serve. Some doctors have spent weeks, months, and even over eight months in captivitybefore release. Others never return. This is not normal.
This is not acceptable.
This is not the Nigeria we must become. We cannot continue like this. To the Government and Security Agencies:
This is not merely a law-and-order issue. It is a national health security crisis.
The continued failure to protect doctors is not just negligence; it is a betrayal of every Nigerian who will one day need medical care.
When healers flee for safety, the sick die. When doctors are silenced by fear, children die. To Nigerians:
A country that cannot protect its doctors cannot protect its people.
If doctors cannot walk home safely, how can we expect them to care for mothers in labour, sick children, the elderly, and the vulnerable? The demands are clear: ● Immediate and unconditional release of all kidnapped doctors ● Concrete, verifiable security measures to protect health workers nationwide ● Justice for victims and their families, not empty promises ● Accountability from those entrusted with protecting citizens Doctors are not expendable. They are national assets.
We will not be silent. We will not normalize this evil.
We will not stand by while those who give life are treated like prey. #StopKillingOurDoctors
