Full hall on Friday afternoon! 🤩 The last keynote of the conference, provided by @ananny, highlighted the dual nature of GenAI as both an object of public concern and an agent with public power. He argues that GenAI's problematic nature depends upon how we define 'public'.

The session 9 covered a broad range of topics that explore the intersection of journalism, technology, and the ethical and epistemic challenges that come with these developments. Great insights by Ilgar Seyidov, @laahva, @papuuska, Viljami Vaarala, Katja Leifheit and Judith Pies!

Session led by @jahapaula contemplated the interplay between climate journalism, digital platforms, expert knowledge, and political dynamics related to climate change. Valuable perspectives were provided by @bettapetrucci, @o_dovbysh, @RKunelius, Marko Ampuja & @ArttuMalkamaki 👏

Session 7 focused on journalistic de-professionalization, power struggles on digital platforms and the challenges of researching algorithms. Thank you Péter Bajomi-Lázár, Dalma Boldog, @jahapaula, @kekarppi and @h0d3r for thought provoking presentations! 🙏

Session 6 dealt with themes of pluralism, newsroom diversity, inclusion of linguistic minorities, and the risks of disinformation fostered by emerging technologies. Thank you @marynur, @ninahavumetsa, @mtkoponen, @ylikoma, Reeta Pöyhtäri, @ReettaNous for important perspectives!

The second conference day started with a presentation by @eugeniasiapera discussing AI’s democratic potential. Siapera argues that a radical rethinking is needed for AI to serve societal goals like sustainability and equality.

The session "Epistemic Wellbeing: Theories and Empirical Conditions" covered a range of themes related to how knowledge and information structures affect individual and societal wellbeing. Great presentations by Hilde Van den Bulck, @shenjavdgraaf, Juha Lång and @svynarenko 👏

Session 4 engaged with the complexities of accountability and epistemic harms in media, particularly in contexts of political polarization, disinformation, and technological mediation. Thank you Rune Saugmann, @heikkilah, @To_Elina, @HarambamJaron, @kpolynczuk and @zeaszebeni 👏

Session 2 addressed the complexities of maintaining democratic practices in an age marked by disinformation, media trust erosion & shifts in the production and consumption of news. Thank you AuksėBalčytienė, @matikainenjanne, @SallaTuomola, @koikkal, MikkoGrönlund & @OvaskaLiisa!

In the session entitled Freedom of Speech and Platforms @tarlachmc discussed how European regulatory instruments protect or promote epistemic and democratic values online. His talk was followed by comments and presentations by Anni Carlsson & Riku Neuvonen.

Session 3 addressed the tension between the media's public service mission and the challenges posed by platformization, AI, and disinformation. Many thanks to Filip Świtkowski, Alessandro D’Arma, @MariaMichalis, Hannu Nieminen @OPuukko, Christopher Phiri and Hilde van den Bulck🙏

The session chaired by Hannu Nieminen provided discussions on how digital platforms and AI are reshaping media accountability and democratic processes. Great insights by @JosefTrappel, Blanca Basanta, @RalfSpiller and Sadia Zamir 👏

In her keynote Hilde Van Den Bulck used the concept of epistemic welfare to analyze how well structures, organizations and practices that relate to communication in the public sphere fulfill epistemic standards, and, thus, contribute to individuals’ epistemic agency.
