@Nancyshollow @farmersjournal A percentage of straw has always been chopped however the tillage area in Ireland has dropped by almost 20% since 2012. Nobody complained when there was a surplus of straw for several years! The tillage farmers income wasn't important as long as the stock man got his allocation.

@declan7500 @farmersjournal That doesn't explain anything. Before 2019, no one was paid to mulch straw, they baled it and sold it. And didn't have to buy mulchers. And you'd prefer to mulch it, and end up having to import straw to fill the shortage? And risk importing disease? What a guy, fair play to you.

@Nancyshollow @farmersjournal Your evidently very out of touch with how trying to get straw baled can effect the tillage farmers ability to get crops harvested. We haven't cut a single acre of winter barley yet because weather isn't dry enough to save straw. If we had option to chop we'd b finished.

@farmersjournal Such whingers. They want payment to plough it in, and now they want payment to bale it, in spite of the fact that there's going to be a shortage and the bales will be worth a fortune. And they attack the minister for trying to avoid imports.

@declan7500 At a guess 6-7000ac Declan. I wouldn’t like to see water mixing with the oil. Not to mention that it would probably happen when you are busy spraying. These machines rarely break in the shed!

Another wet day job - servicing the sprayer pump. Just as well I went to change diaphragms as they were all cracked. Replacing valve springs also. Full disassembly as there’s a shaft oil seal leaking. Seals replaced in Ramsey system also.

@whittledaway You are completely out of touch with reality. Waterways across Ireland have not been maintained or dredged in several years. Climate change is nothing to do with it. If you fail to maintain your car it will break down. Same applies to watercourses.

dredge the estuary... ditch the cycle lanes... put in big pipes... "simple as that" (except that what we've been doing for 80 years and now climate change is making things even worse 😬)

We really need @agriculture_ie to wake up and stop trying to set farming deadlines by calendar and instead look at the weather and soil stats and forecasts. We have more heavy rain tomorrow but then nice settled warm few days from weekend but the slurry deadline is Sunday!
