I’m proud to share that my bill, 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝟐𝟕𝟓, has successfully passed the Criminal Justice Committee.
HB 275 strengthens Louisiana’s 𝐃𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐄𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐋𝐚𝐰 by increasing the minimum sentencing penalties when domestic abuse battery is committed 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝟏𝟑 𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫.
Under current law, offenders could face up to 3 years for this enhancement. 𝐇𝐁 𝟐𝟕𝟓 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐭𝐨 a minimum 1 𝐭𝐨 3 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 for the first offense and a minimum 3 to 6 years for the second offense, ensuring stronger accountability for those who expose children to violence in the home.
When a child witnesses domestic violence, the harm doesn’t stop with what they see—it impacts their safety, their development, and their future. This legislation makes it clear: 𝐰𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲.
This is about protecting our most vulnerable and sending a clear message that the presence of a child matters and it will carry serious consequences.
