As we celebrate the anniversary of the #ADA, we reflect on the landmark legislation that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life. 36 years later, Americans with disabilities STILL face barriers to health, housing, and employment in their day-to-day lives. Let’s celebrate the progress we’ve made while recommitting to fighting for equity, access, and justice for all.

I was honored to host our annual back-to-school giveaway today with @DeeBoydBroker ! With school starting soon, we were excited to give out free school supplies to the children in our communities so they have the tools they need to thrive academically and start the school year off right.

178 years after the Seneca Falls Convention, we are witnessing the erosion of our rights – from reproductive healthcare to voting rights to freedom of expression. The #EqualRightsAmendment would explicitly prohibit sex-based discrimination and enshrine gender equality where it has always belonged – in the Constitution. It was great visiting Studio BE this morning to speak with the Eternal Seeds Summer Session youth program! This year, students explored themes connected to 250 years of America, the future of this country, and the role young people can play in shaping their future. I was honored to speak to our young people and answer their questions about how civic engagement works beyond the classroom.

Today, I salute the life and legacy of a New Orleans icon and my dear friend, Lester V. Johnson. As the owner of the Bottom Line in New Orleans, he was a pioneering African American businessman, and his restaurant brought the city the best in Cajun & Creole cuisine. Most importantly, he was an integral part of our community. My prayers are with his loved ones as Lester rests in peace.

I was excited to attend the Ribbon Cutting for the Splash Pad in Algiers, which will be next to the forthcoming Algiers Indoor Swimming Pool. With record-breaking heat in recent years, this splash pad will be a lifesaving resource for the residents of my beloved Cut Off. I was proud to provide vital funding for the project and am so excited to see real progress being made for our community.

The federal minimum wage hasn’t increased since 2009, but rent, groceries, and gas have. $7.25 an hour is nowhere near a livable wage. Enough is enough - it’s time to pay workers what they’re owed and increase the federal minimum wage.

When a doctor identifies a mental health need in our young people, they shouldn’t have to wait to treat them. They should be able to see a doctor right then and there. That’s why @repnealdunn, @repangiecraig, and I introduced the Improving CARE for Youth Act. This bill will increase access to mental health & primary care for children enrolled in Medicaid and provide life-saving care for young people across this country. I was proud to champion the FDA Modernization Act 3.0 alongside @RepBuddyCarter, @RepBarragan, @rosadelauro, and @RepHarshbarger. This legislation works to modernize and transform drug development for the 21st century, accelerate safer, more biomedical breakthroughs and advance more humane scientific research by reducing unnecessary animal testing in drug development. In Richland Parish, Louisiana, the Hyperion Data Center project is a $50 billion @meta data center project that could bring thousands of construction and operations jobs, and create a windfall of tax revenue for improving schools and infrastructure. However, small businesses and elderly residents should not foot the bill for these major projects with increased monthly utility bills. 📷 A major step forward for food safety and American shrimpers. The Destruction of Hazardous Imports Act has officially passed the U.S. House of Representatives and now moves to the Senate. If enacted, this legislation would give the FDA the authority to require the destruction of imported products that pose a significant public health risk—closing a loophole that has allowed dangerous imports to seek entry through another U.S. port. We extend our sincere thanks to @RepClayHiggins and @RepTroyCarter for their bipartisan leadership and unwavering commitment to strengthening America's food safety system and standing with our nation's commercial fishermen. We also appreciate the many shrimpers and industry advocates whose grassroots efforts helped make this milestone possible. This is an important step—but the work isn't finished. I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of George Chachere. George was a longtime postal worker, dedicated member of the Peace Corps, and New Orleans native son who spent his time participating in community activities around the city. He was a man with an extraordinary legacy of service and activism, and his passing is an incredible loss for our community. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones in this difficult time.
