Every time that I travel abroad and watch soccer it is always apparent why we are so far behind globally. Look in any park, town square, neighborhood and some kid has a ball on their foot. The development is not in training, it’s away from it. The improvisation and comfort level comes from the unstructured nature of the game in an alley, square, beach, or park. I watch club training sessions at local clubs. The training is basically the same across the board with a few exceptions. Rondos, some technical dribbling, finishing in front of goal, possession games and maybe small sided games to goal. The difference is time spent with the ball on their foot on their own. If US Soccer truly wants to change the game, make the game accessible for everyone. Develop futsal halls or courts in every park and emphasize local over national platforms. The beauty of the game is that in its most simplistic form it’s about a ball and people. Thats my rant. Look forward to getting back home.
