Does unc still got it? 43 year old Justin Verlander is currently 99th percentile K% this Spring with a 34.9% K rate. He is also 93rd percentile in Whiff%, 88th percentile in Chase% and 96th percentile in Swinging Strike%. Beast.

@dondelany6 Probably the weekend prior. Doesn’t matter to me I’m going to watch the breakout game but I just meant it’s probably not going to be good for ratings

Not very good planning by the MLB to schedule the Spring Breakout games on the same weekend as the beginning of the NCAA Tournament

@cilwill58 Unless you somehow know something the rest of us don’t, I’d gladly take that bet. In my eyes he’s already made the team, just waiting to last min to announce it to push off the 40 man move and activation of service time

To add to this—the Tigers only have one Spring Training game after Friday before flying to AZ for the scrimmages against the Rockies. They would probably let McGonigle go play in the Spring Breakout game and option him if they didn’t think he’s making the roster.

@stevekotarski In JV’s last start he played against a good chunk of Orioles starters. This close to the regular season playing real MLB players, that isn’t nothing. It’s perfectly okay to read into Spring stats a little bit!

@stevekotarski People seem to have a hard time finding a middle ground. Spring stats don’t necessarily indicate success in the regular season, sure. But they are useful and these underlying metrics can help show what seems to be working for them so far

Some things to like about his Spring so far: • Doesn’t chase • Has hit the ball hard • Doesn’t whiff a ton • Great launch angles Some things not to like: • Doesn’t walk much • Doesn’t find the barrel • Almost never pulls the ball in the air

I don’t think he’s necessarily on the verge of making the team, but the fact that John Peck is still in big league camp tells me the Tigers think pretty highly of him and think he can be a contributor soon.

@deeptocenter Yeah, none of McGonigle, Cruz, Peck, and Anderson are on the roster- those must be the guys who haven’t been optioned yet. AJ said a few days ago they’ll make the final decision at the end of camp- I believe him, but I still think McGonigle makes the team

@deeptocenter I don’t think McGonigle will lead the Tigers in OPS this year, but he absolutely might.

@confusion_reign Yeah but that’s less than a week to opening day and I imagine they probably plan on only bringing mostly the OD roster to AZ against COL, so keeping him in major league camp for Friday is a pretty damn good indicator

@deeptocenter I mean, I think he’s making the team but it doesn’t make sense for him to play spring breakout while he’s in MLB camp. They have a game that day

@realGB94 Not going to do it before Opening Day or they’d lose PPI incentive eligibility. But even if they kept him down for 15 games, he’d still be awarded a full season of service time anyways if he wins ROTY. And in that case the Tigers wouldn’t get PPI pick because of holding him down.

@deeptocenter Hopefully they can lock in a deal soon then because losing his full age 27 season for 15 games is a horrible trade off
