Spoilers for Obsession (2026): I understand why people adore Obsession. It’s a modern fairy tale, and people yearn for those. Girls especially seem to love it because it’s every intrusive thought they have in a relationship taken to the point of parody. I love the parallel of her writing a love story only to correct Bear by saying, “It’s not a romance.” It perfectly sets up the story. I believe Bear redeems himself when he manages to kill himself, though he can’t even do it with a gun, showing he remained spineless to the very end. It’s a fitting ending, yet his death breaks the spell on Nikki, making it the only true act of love in the entire film.

There's a Catch-22 here. If he'd had enough spine to convince someone to make the overriding wish, or enough backbone to handle the obsessed Nikki we'd not have a movie.

Oh, she's trapped under Evil Willow's magic. I'll be honest—that's bad. But you also have this "new Nikki," who is essentially born from his desires. There are now two people: one who loves you intensely, and the original, who, to be honest, isn't all that interesting. If there had been a mechanical way to bring back the real Nikki, I'd agree. But the movie shows there isn't, aside from convincing someone else to make a very specific wish, something the protagonist neither seemed capable of doing nor clever enough to manipulate into happening. So you're left with this obsessed Nikki as a new person, and she's his responsibility. He should have guided her through that overwhelming infatuation before it became self-destructive—which is probably something already innate to Nikki's personality anyway. Imagine directing that devotion into becoming a proper housewife, or a great partner who helps pay the bills, turning that love into mutual care. But no. He completely blew it like a moronic doofus. "You don't love me as much as I love you." "True, but that's fine. Your love is enough to hold us together." I genuinely think the message is: be strong-willed enough to handle the yandere girlfriend. Screw the other one.

Obsession was a very hot movie about a wimp-ass dude who couldn't handle his new yandere girlfriend. I'm not LARPing as some edgelord, either. I genuinely thought it was a very hot movie. Maybe I am broken.

Physically, if you were under that, you'd never live beyond the very year you're in Worth it
