In our #MVLTARE trial, one of the practices we are evaluating is retaining vs removing crop residue. Farmers can sell straw bales for some extra cash, but do the soil benefits outweigh this added income? We'll find out! @wasoilhealth

For non-soil nerds, the red is oxidized iron (like rust) and the black is manganese. When the soil is saturated with water for part of the year, Fe and Mn become mobile, then when soil dries they change form (oxidize) wherever the water has taken them.

Last week in our #MVLTARE, we took cores to estimate soil bulk density and calculate C stocks. Taking deep soil cores can be challenging but is a wonderful reminder of the beauty of soil. Check out those redox features!! @wasoilhealth

Thanks to everyone who joined us at the 2nd annual Buckwheat Festival! We had such a wonderful time learning from folks' experience growing, milling, and baking with buckwheat. Special thanks to @Seed_Alliance for making this event such a success!

Got to show off the 16-acre WSU soil health research plot in Mount Vernon to soil health champion @SenMarkoLiias, Rep. Carolyn Eslick and other friends. I even got to serve as assistant to the esteemed @deirdregriff. “You were, like, the Price is Right person!” — @CataAmortegui

PhD student Nayab Gull explains research into the development of biodegradable mulches desired by growers. Early theme emerging on this tour of the prevalence and importance of research contributions made by WSU graduate students.

Learning about research generated as part of the Soil Health Initiative on the #WSUStaffTour2024. Here we’re looking at differences in microbial activity and how water moves through different soil conditions. #GoCougs

Saponins on quinoa (which foam up in water) protect the plant from insects in the field and in storage but need to be removed before consumption, making processing harder for growers. We are trialing "sweet" (low saponin) varieties that may be easier for small-scale growers.
