Trends are temporary … they create spikes, not sustainability. If you want long term success, focus on building a brand with a clear message, consistent value, and emotional connection. That’s what lasts.

Almost none of the startups or VCs were successful in the first wave of startups in Pakistan. This isn't atypical in a nascent ecosystem. Easy money lures in wrong people for all the wrong reasons: - Management consultants and MBA-types with good connections quickly make pretty decks to raise funds based on the huge potential of the Pakistan market, but very few actually know how to build an innovative product and are willing to grind for 5-7 years. - Wealthy second gen kids start pretending to be venture capitalists mostly as a vanity play. "Startup mentors" and "advisors" start grabbing unfair equity for simply making introductions to VCs abroad. Still, Pakistan's opportunity remains super promising, with the possibility of scores of unicorns in FinTech, AgriTech, E-commerce, B2B E-commerce, Edtech etc. The current wave of startup founders seem more promising, and many have the skills and resilience to build scalable startups. Our Achilles heal, however, remains the dearth of follow-on capital. A few million dollars initial raise is almost never sufficient to build a valuable company. We need to get global VCs to open offices in Pakistan and need government support to help under-write the risk for their investments. The Pakistan Startup Fund, which I started in the interim government, was a step in this direction. Hope we are able to make it work soon ....
