Before it was a federal holiday, Labor Day was recognized by labor activists and individual states. On September 5, 1882, the first Labor Day holiday, planned by the Central Labor Union, was celebrated on a Tuesday in New York City.

Twelve years later, the states ratified the United States Constitution, thus establishing the country's independence and a new form of government. Today, 247 years later, what started as an affiliation of colonies has grown to 50 states and more than 333 million people.

The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776, by the 2nd Continental Congress leading the 13 colonies to gain independence from Great Britain.
