I said I would give people a bit more breathing space. Today I’m taking immediate action - cutting taxes on energy bills to put more money in your pocket.

It has been the privilege of my life to serve as the Chancellor of the Exchequer. The economy today is stronger, fairer and more resilient because of the choices we have taken as a Labour Government over the past two years. Stability restored, investment delivered and reform to our economy under way. I said when I was appointed Chancellor that I would judge my time in office if the lives ordinary working class people have been improved. I’m proud to say that they have. And to every young woman and girl let my time in office show there should be no ceilings on your ambitions, your hopes or your dreams. I wish the very best of luck to my successor, Andy and his cabinet. You have my full support, and I will continue to play my part in helping this Labour government deliver the change the country needs.

Disgusting. The University of Aberdeen says it is “looking into” comments made by employee Heather Herbert after she publicly celebrated the death of former MP Ann Widdecombe. Responding to the announcement, Herbert wrote: “Some good news for once. I hope it was an extremely painful death.” She then added: “I hope she was handcuffed to the bed as she screamed in agony.” A local report says Herbert offered no apology when questioned, while the university confirmed it was examining the matter. You can disagree with every political position Ann Widdecombe ever held. You can criticise her record, her beliefs and her words. But publicly fantasising about a 78-year-old woman being restrained and screaming in agony is not political criticism. It is grotesque. The University of Aberdeen now needs to decide whether this conduct meets the standards it expects from somebody publicly identified as one of its employees. And “looking into it” cannot simply become the usual holding statement until the outrage disappears. #AnnWiddecombe #UniversityOfAberdeen #PoliticalViolence #PublicStandards #UKPolitics
