How many times have you been to the border @briankruck ? How much time with sex trafficked women or taking care of abused? Maybe we shouldn't "consider" this false dichotomy, but get involved. Especially when your president isnt putting us at risk of open borders.

The conversation about immigration policy is an important one. As Christians, we are clearly taught to show compassion to the foreigner/alien/stranger in our midst. Yet, we must also consider the lack of compassion that an open border policy shows. Sex trafficking, sexual abuse, drug running, using children as pawns, and many more atrocities are encouraged without common sense border protections. In sum, the heart of the Christian citizen must always regard the alien and stranger as our equal and worthy of the same respect. And, the mind of the Christian citizen cannot be so naive to think that allowing unfettered and unvetted access to a country is in any way reflective of a government that is conducting itself in the ways that scripture advocates.

@OctaviusIV But I also don't think we can or should ever substitute lives where we aren't seeking embodied community we can repent to (not sure it's ever easy). The more we do it in the intimacy of our physcial lives, the easier it is to imagine it in a virtual "public" space.

@OctaviusIV I think even online you can start with listening to understand, confrssion, demonstration of humility, curiosity, and teachability...make committments to learn something new, follow through on those committments, or even give yourself a long timeout from using certain platforms.

tbh a recontextualized theology of repentance is particularly needed in an era when all your offenses can live forever online.

Why do evangelicals wright so much on forgiveness and so little on repentance? We (rightfully) ask victims to release their offense, but we so rarely publish books on how offenders should seek restoration. Abstract gospel leads to me & Jesus w/ out you & me.

@OctaviusIV 2/2 The entire internet can cancel you, but a community that is able to hold your worst actions, ignorant oversights, and unique beauty is one that empowers you to repair harm & live with peace when the entire world still sees you as whatever is frozen in time.

@OctaviusIV (1/2) I dont know that the online space is where we can.... but we learn to live into our forgiven identities in committed friendships & community. We dont minimize or erase what happened, but we also have our belovedness re-narrated through our communal practices.

I wonder if crying is one way to convert anger to the truer and deeper thing: grief, betrayal, powerlessness, sorrow, vulnerablity to harm. Anger is like bracing yourself for impact. Those deeper places are the tender spots love can penetrate and heal.
