Hidden in the ancient capital of Asuka, Japan, the mysterious Sakafuneishi Stone has puzzled researchers for centuries. The massive carved stone features intricate channels and basins whose purpose remains unknown. Some suggest they were designed to carry water, sake, medicinal liquids, or floating ritual objects, while others believe the layout resembles a ceremonial altar used in ancient rituals. Even more intriguing, the angles of its carved branches appear to align with the changing sunset positions between the equinoxes and solstices, leading some to speculate that it may have also served an astronomical or ceremonial function. Mainstream researchers date it to the 7th-century Asuka Period, but was it actually from a much older period in time? Who carved it—and why—remains one of Japan’s greatest archaeological mysteries.
