I've found that animating chemical reaction mechanisms is well worth the effort for helping to explain reaction mechanisms, especially to students and non-chemists. For example, I made this simplified self-immolation animation to explain our linkers from pubs.rsc.org/en/content/art…

Many thanks to all current and former members of the group thepilgrimgroup.co.uk collaborators, mentors throughout my career, and most importantly friends and family who have helped along the way. Couldn't have done it without you!

Really honoured to be recognised by UoN colleagues for this prestigious award. The award was in recognition of both my pedagogical approaches to gamification within lectures to enhance learning as well as my wider outreach work through the International Chemistry Olympiad.

We are delighted that our colleague Ben Pilgrim (@BenSPilgrim) has been awarded one of the 2022 Lord Dearing awards for his outstanding contribution to the development of teaching and student learning this year. Many congratulations, Ben!!!

Last Friday marked my last official day @SydneyChemistry and my last day in academia (at least for now). Thanks @LMacreadie for throwing together impromptu Zoom drinkies :) Thanks to all my colleagues and students for all the support and great memories!

@igordownunder Lucky you if you are allowed to do something as logical as buying something from eBay!

@lopez_wd @timgill924 I like it - Tinder for academic collaborations, filtered by H-index. We shall call it “H-inder”

@timgill924 I actually wish there was an app where we could see people’s location but the app had an H index filter so you could only approach those with whom you could successfully co author.

Going forward post-pandemic, I would like to see each scholar’s H index placed on their conference badge. It’s a good metric and it saves the trouble of looking folks up. It’s not helpful for me to talk to people who hardly publish. It’s not helpful for either of us to be honest.

@Borodin_O_ @fiszczyp I’d be able to still follow my passion for research while being able to build my family’s life without the disruptions that early-career academia seems to generally bring. Hopefully the situation will improve for early career academics… but I don’t think that time is right now.

@Borodin_O_ @fiszczyp 2/2 a few months ago I was recruited for a great opportunity to work in industrial R&D (ongoing contract). The alternative was having to win more fellowships to stay employed in academia (there is a paucity of ongoing jobs in Australian academia). So, I went for option A as…

Academia is a state where you can be thirty and live in a suitcase with no home and no home prospects. Is it too much to ask to just have some nice things of my own like other 30 y.o.'s rather than disposable shit I'm gonna throw away in my next move?
