Important disclaimers for Syria tourism With summer season around the corner, and I know many people are planning to visit, allow me to make your lives easier: -Getting into Syria is easy, no matter your passport you get a visa on arrival (price depends on passport, western passports are more expensive, use your Pakistani/Turkish/etc. passports for cheap 25-50$ visas, unless you want to pay 100-200$ for your Canadian/American passports) -Flights into Syria (Damascus airport) directly are only available from some close countries: Turkey, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi. The other option is going by land from Jordan or Lebanon (currently not recommended), there are many taxi companies you can find online that take you by land (costs between 50-100$) -For the taxi from Damascus airport, go to the taxi desk on the right hand side before the exit. Last time I was there it was 250k (old currency), around 20$ -Majority of hotels don't have online booking because we're still in the stone age. You should message them ahead of time and figure out how to reserve. If you have contacts in Syria have them call and reserve. If none of that works show up visit the hotels in person and find one you like (they are mostly in clusters close to each other) -BRING CASH WITH YOU. In USD. Banks and ATMs don't work. So unless you want to stand in line for an hour at western union (and maybe get your wire transfer maybe not), bring USD cash!! -Don't exchange cash with street vendors. You might get ripped off you might not it depends really, but since you're a foreigner don't risk it. Find a proper exchange place and exchange there. But if you need to, look up the exchange rate online and say Bismillah. Just make sure they aren't taking too big a commission -There are two currencies being used consecutively right now. Old currency/new currency, the new one is new and shiny you can't mix them up. Remove two zeroes from the old currency and you'll get the amount in new currency. 5,000 old liras = 50 new. Be careful of that with pricings and exchange -Download the Syrian taxi app called YallaGo and use it if you need a taxi. It's more reliable and often cheaper than the yellow taxis off the street. But if you need to the yellow taxis are fine, but agree on the price before getting in. Don't fall for the "whatever you want", agree beforehand or don't get in. Most taxis won't rip you off but I remember a few times even I got ripped off In general you will very rarely be scammed or ripped off, Syrians are naturally very hospitable, I'm just being extra cautious. Everyone who visited Syria tells me they thoroughly enjoy their visit. Be prepared for many gifts especially from food places These are the important things I remember for now, if there is anything else I will add it later!
