@ImJustShaffe Thank you for your question! Bactrian camels are specially adapted to handle different temperature extremes. In the winters, they grow a thick coat of hair to protect them from the cold and in the summers they shed that coat to stay cool. What you're seeing is that shed!

UPDATE: The Zoo will remain closed on Wednesday, Jan. 22 due to the forecasted frigid temperatures. Guests who pre-purchased a Zoo ticket for Jan. 21 or 22 will have their ticket honored for daytime Zoo admission on any future visit.

Bandia has embraced motherhood in a big way and the pair are doing great! She now has the choice to stay in the privacy of the indoor gorilla habitat or venture out to the yard – meaning guests may be able to see mom and baby!

This precious moment marks a momentous occasion — Bandia is now the proud mother of the first gorilla born at the Detroit Zoo in our 96-year history! The baby is healthy and thriving under her attentive care and the supervision of our dedicated animal care team.
