@veeruvishwa @ParveenKaswan Its not just about the ownership of the land, Fine must have been calculated on "Eco System" Services Values of a Tree. Ofcourse there was a violation of illegal cutting of such a large no. of trees. Yes, there can always be a debate on quantum of fine imposed.

@deva_iitkgp @ParveenKaswan This is exorbitant. Most of the trees were on the private land. So, they were private properties. Further, if SC is serious about environment then it must reduce ecological footprint of its work. Further, the environmental cost added due to pending 5 crore cases must be addressed

If not today, one day , this will be accepted by all !! 1 Lakh Fine imposed by Hon'ble SC for each tree cut illegally by the accused. @ParveenKaswan

Btw, this Hill Myna bird is quite a talkative bird & can immitate many sounds including of Humans.Hence, traded & kept illegally by many.But to sale or to keep this bird at home is a punishable offence & enjoys protection equals to Tiger or Elephant. @thebetterindia @drqayumiitk

From arresting and unearthing this bird smuggling racket in the district & successfully prosecuting the case within 9 months, our Team of Buxa Tiger Reserve(East) Division worked reallly hard to get this done. Kudos to them. @rameshpandeyifs

Where conviction rate is extremely low, particularly in Wildlife smuggling cases across India, in a landmark judgement, 3 Years of rigorous punishment & Rs. 10,000/- fine awarded to accused arrested 9 months back only in smuggling of 7 Hill Myna in Alipurduar,WB. @ParveenKaswan
