I used to brag that my dad was the coolest because he never yelled or punished us. He’d just shrug and say “do what you want” when we messed up. I thought it meant he trusted us. Found out last weekend from my mom that he was deep in his own depression the whole time. He wasn’t chill..... he was checked out. Couldn’t even bring himself to care enough to argue. All those “your choice” moments weren’t wisdom… they were exhaustion. I’m 22 and it rewired how I see my whole childhood. I spent years thinking I was just naturally well-behaved when really I was raising myself while he was barely hanging on. Now when people say “your dad seems so laid back” I just smile and change the subject. Some parents aren’t calm… they’re just gone in their own way. Wild how long it takes to see it.

At 26 most people could pivot careers, move countries, live poor, move back in with family, etc. a 47yo father with two kids under 18 has a whole world of problems if their livelihood disappears.

THIS 47 YEAR OLD DEVELOPER WATCHED CLAUDE DO HIS LIFE'S WORK IN 2 MINUTES he started coding at 14 on a friend's computer. worked his way up from computer tech in 1999 to system admin to senior developer over 25+ years programming WAS his whole identity and represented who he was he owns a marketing agency now and built the custom CRM himself a few years back yesterday his employee asked him to add a feature he spent 30 seconds writing the prompt. claude shipped the feature in 2 minutes. first try, perfect his words: "it's depressing to say the least. that realization that all those years of building my skills has, at this stage, amounted to absolutely nothing" every experienced dev is having a midlife crisis right now. watching the skill they spent their entire life building became useless but here's what he's missing claude did it so easily BECAUSE he knew what needed to be done he spent 25 years learning to think like an engineer and he's the reason the 30 second prompt worked in the first place the skill is knowing what to build, how to review it, and knowing when the output is actually correct vibecoders without that foundation are about to find out the hard way (most already have) and the people who spent decades learning to think like engineers are the ones who build AI in the first place
