The Dithering By @devharlan These interactive works examine the ethical entanglements of tech and climate science — mapping where we stand (“You Are Here”) amidst hypothetical trajectories of apathy, denial, and systemic inertia. The aesthetic nod to early computing isn’t just nostalgic; it underscores how tech culture has historically dismissed or sidelined environmental urgency. The epithet-laden quadrants within the works such as “Cyberlibertarian Protein Shake” and “WAGMI Clone”, use humour to critique and address specific ideologies—poking at techtopian fantasies and the ethical dilemmas of modernity. Harlan pulls in miscellaneous digital artifacts—icons, menus, and interface elements from 1980s and 90s computing, which contrast the optimism of early tech culture with today’s environmental reckoning. These are organised as abstract forms, reminiscent of weather patterns or swirling eddies, algorithmically generated from models tied to the IPCC report. FAKEWHALE x DEV HARLAN We’re thrilled to announce Fakewhale’s first curation on Verse: The Dithering (You Are Here) by @devharlan. The series critiques climate apathy through the lens of 1990s techtopian culture, using an emulated Macintosh II desktop as its canvas. Reconstructing pages from the 1990 IPCC Climate Assessment Report, the works combine the pages with generative code to create algorithmic visuals featuring strange attractor models, satellite imagery, and textual excerpts. Drawing parallels between dithering in computer graphics—where color depth is reduced for clarity—and society’s ethical dithering on climate action, Harlan highlights the persistent inaction that has caused irreparable harm. This work situates the climate crisis within the historical moment of its early neglect, offering a poignant commentary on technology’s role in shaping both awareness and indifference. Harlan's multidisciplinary practice encompasses sculpture, installation, and digital media, delving into themes of landscape, anthropogenic change, and technological consumption. His work prompts a reevaluation of the perceived divide between human societies and the natural world, exploring their intricate entanglement. Harlan’s work has been showcased internationally, at Christopher Henry Gallery, Gallery Madison Park in New York, the Sharjah Art Museum, and the New Museum in New York. It’s an honour to have Dev Harlan’s work on Verse, and to work with @fakewhale_xyz, a platform working tirelessly to elevate contemporary art through extensive editorial and curatorial efforts.

@Georg_Eckmayr Sadly yes, he passed away last year, but the manuscript had already been approved by the publisher. It’s a much longer book than 2016, he elaborates on many of the same themes but with a broader critique of techtopianism

@devharlan Thanks pointing me to this. Is it a posthumous publication? I wonder how it is different from his 2016 take which offers an intriguing analysis.
